Overview of Mud Guns in Solids Control Systems
2026-03-14
In oilfield solids control systems, the mud gun is an important device used to maintain the performance of drilling fluid. Its main function is to circulate drilling mud inside the mud tank and prevent solid particles from settling. By keeping the drilling fluid uniformly mixed, the mud gun helps maintain stable drilling operations and efficient solids transport.

Function and Operation of Mud Guns
Mud guns are typically installed inside the mud tank and work together with a mud agitator.
- The mud agitator mixes drilling fluid in the center of the tank.
- The mud gun is installed near the tank corners to circulate the fluid and remove sediment that may accumulate along the tank walls.
This combined operation ensures that drilling fluid remains evenly mixed throughout the entire tank.
KOSUN mud guns are designed for different drilling mud solids control systems and are available in low-pressure, medium-pressure, and high-pressure models. They are usually connected to centrifugal pumps or mud pumps, and can also work with shear pumps. The equipment helps clean the tank walls and prevent mud sedimentation, providing reliable performance and efficient tank cleaning.
Safety Information
To ensure safe operation, the following precautions should be followed:
1.Turn off, lock out, and tag out the electrical power supply to the pumps feeding the mud gun before servicing.
2.Inspect the equipment regularly and replace damaged components only with original manufacturer parts.
3.Lock out and tag out mud agitators before entering the mud tank for maintenance.
Maintenance Guidelines
Regular maintenance helps ensure stable operation of the mud gun.
- Weekly: Grease the swivel with multi-purpose grease.
- Weekly: Inspect the assembly for leaks or loose fittings.
- Monthly: Check the jet nozzle for excessive wear.
After installation, the mud gun can be started by turning on the feed pump. The discharge direction can be adjusted by rotating the swivel to meet operational requirements.
