Distinction between Decanter Centrifuge and Vertical Centrifuge

When people hear about the terms of “decanter centrifuge” and “vertical centrifuge”, they may feel confused about them. Their names indicate that they are just different from external configuration: one is horizontal and the other is vertical. But in fact, they are totally not similar.

Decanter Centrifuge (DC) is mainly used as the drilling mud solids control equipment in the customers’ drilling site for solid-liquid separation. The Decanter Centrifuge (DC) is used to separate suspension containing solid particles with particle diameter equal to or larger than 2μm, solid concentration ranging 2-70% and liquid viscosity equal to or less than 0.01Pa•s and clarify liquid containing little solids.

Decanter Centrifuge (DC) adopts centralized control integrating a new-type dual-frequency control system and various protection systems. The operation method is: Start main power button—start auxiliary motor button—after auxiliary motor runs 30~50 seconds, observe whether the machine has any abnormal sound—start main drive motor—after the whole machine runs 30~50 seconds, start feed pump motor to feed liquid for centrifuge.

In contrast, vertical cuttings dryer (VC) is very important for drilling waste management in oil field. After treatment of vertical centrifuge, the OOC contained in cuttings can be reduced to less than 5% by weight.

During the working cycle of vertical cuttings dryer (VC), the feed is introduced from the top of the machine through the charging hopper, immediately accelerated to the machine speed by the cone cap and flights and directed to the screen basket surface. Liquid-solid separation starts immediately after contact with the screen basket surface. The flow rate over the screen is controlled by the speed differential between the cone and the basket and by the flights, which also agitate or roll the solids to further assist separation. Solids are discharged at the screen bottom and fall by gravity into the discharge area of the machine. Solids can then be collected by a hopper or other conveying system placed underneath the machine. Fluids flow through the screen in the launder area and are discharged through the effluent opening.

Decanter centrifuge and vertical centrifuge have their own role to play during the oil field drilling process, with decanter centrifuge for drilling mud solids control and vertical centrifuge for drilling waste management. They are used in different drilling stages; however, proper operation of decanter centrifuge and vertical centrifuge can ensure high drilling efficiency, guarantee people and equipment safety and reduce the drilling costs.
