Solid control system is an indispensible part for every drilling rig. But many newcomers of drilling industry have no idea of the functions of solid control equipment.
During well drillings, the drill bits have to face big frictions, which can damage the bits very fast. So drilling mud, which was compounded by many kinds of chemicals was applied as lubricator of bits. But when the mud comes out from the well with those articles produced from drilling, how should we deal with this used mud.
Historically, contaminated and dirty mud was dumped in open pits, allowing the natural environment to become polluted. Additionally, very aggressive chemicals are sometimes used to clean materials through up when filtration was not sufficient. These chemicals can pollute the environment as well, generating a variety of environmental problems for monitoring the environmental impact of drilling activities, with the engineer ensuring that the company conforms to the law and its own internal environmental standards. What’s more, mud is compound by many kinds of chemicals, some of which are very expensive. As we know, the consumption of mud is very big during drilling. If we poured mud to the open pits every time, it means we have to cost much for this section of the drilling. For all drilling operators, this way is unacceptable, because the drilling mud can be reused if we separate the articles out and adjust the composition again.

Both of these make the solid control equipment so necessary and important, because solid control equipment can provide a circulation system for drilling mud. After the new compounded mud used for the lubrication of the drill bit, it will bring out the particles and be lead to the mud tank, shale shaker, desander, desilter, centrifuge and some other components of drilling fluids recycling system, through which even very small particles can be separated. And then the mud will be filled with some water or added with some kinds of chemicals, through which the mud can be filled back to well again and perform just as new mud. This kind of circulation can provide a sustainable usage of drilling mud, which can save much for the operators. With this system, operators don’t need to purchase large quantity of mud and also don’t need to be worried about the penalties or lawsuits from the environmental departments of the countries where oilfields located. Because the solid control system can reduce the pollution of environment in a very low level. Environment protection and cost saving are the two main functions of solid control system during drilling.
