The role of drilling fluid in the drilling operation and protection for the oil and gas and the strict requirements for drilling fluid from the various aspects, make the drilling fluid technology get rapid development.
After the research & development and production practice of years, the drilling fluid has not only met the need of drilling, but also adapted at drilling fluid system in all aspects, such as the polymer drilling fluid with low viscosity, low friction and low solidoid for fast drilling services, the anti-sloughing drilling fluid, drilling fluids rock characteristics, saturated brine drilling fluid of salt rock, oil-in-water drilling fluid of low density protecting reservoir etc. Which formed a relatively complete system of drilling fluid.
Now the high quality drilling fluid is not composed of one or two materials (such as bentonite) . To keep the capability of the drilling fluids, it needs to add various treatment agent, such as drilling fluid lubricant, high temperature stabilizer, anti-sloughing agent. According to the statistics in the year of 1992 , treatment agent series has increased to ten categories including 202 kinds, forming an important branch of oilfield chemistry.
For the removal of solid particles in the drilling fluid, the treatment system of solid particles has been strengthened and improved. The solid particles in the drilling fluid as cuttings and barite, impede the flowing of drilling fluid, which not only damage the performance of drilling fluid stability, but also increases the friction of the circulatory system, so that the equipment suffers wear and tear too early. The main method of removing solid content in drilling fluids is strengthening the vibration frequency of the vibrating screen, increasing the screen mesh size and double screen, improving the efficiency of the desilter and desander. In addition, sometimes, we need to add additional separator to remove fine particles in drilling fluid.
In order to improve the use and measurement standard of drilling fluid, China has adopted the relatively advanced standards & norms of American Petroleum Institute and the drilling fluid measuring instrument and equipment.
